In normal situation, we
breathe in a rhythm when we are awake because our brain is alert and
all of our muscles are functioning normally. However, once the child
falls asleep, their brain begins to relax and so does all of the
muscles, including breathing muscles. Thus, while sleeping, the
breathing may become irregular and more difficult resulting in
snoring.
For children, snoring is most common
during age 2 to 6 years old due to the enlargement of adenoids
(behind the nose) and/or tonsil (at the base of the tongue), which
blocks the upper airway passage. It's also common in overweight
children.

Symptoms:
|
Snoring occurs
together with breathing difficulty while sleeping. This is the
opposite from the normal breathing which occurs when you are
awake. The breathing is usually forceful. Sufferer tends to
breathe with their mouth open, make snoring sound intermittently,
and sleep restlessly in strange sleeping positions. When you are
snoring, your chest tends to collapse and your stomach will rise
while you are breathing in.
Children who snore
often wet their bed at night, very naughty during day time, unable
to stay still, and learning capability reduces. As a result, work
efficiency drops or the child have no concentration level and
become easily agitated. The child wakes up frequently at night
from bad dreams, and has problems waking up in the morning due to
dizziness or un-refreshed feeling.

The best diagnostic test to
perform is called a polysomnography, which uses a modern polysomnograph
machine to measure and record a number of physiologic variables during
sleep. The procedure involves having the patient sleeps one night in a
special room at the hospital. For child patients, parents are welcome to
sleep with the child. A special nurse will stand by to monitor the
patient's breathing, while the computer will measure various values
through the cords that are placed at various locations on the patient's
body for 6 to 8 hours. This test is painless, and the information acquired
can reveal the severity level of the airway restriction during the
patient's sleep.
