Cataract is the most common eye disease and has become a major health issue in Thailand. Every year, there are over 60,000 patients who have received cataract surgery throughout the country. Due to the increased in the number of elderly people every year, there are still a large number of people in the backlog waiting to undergo surgery.
Cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye and is caused by many reasons such as infection of the fetus during pregnancy and accidents. However, in most cases, its caused by the aging of the eye. Thus, we recommend that everyone over 45 years old undergo a thorough eye examination to look for any presence of cataract.
The treatment for cataract at
the initial stage where the vision is only slightly blurry is prescription
glasses or sun glasses to alleviate the situation. Eventually, the
cataract becomes cloudier and begins to impact your ability to work or
carry on with the daily activities. At this stage, the only treatment is
via cataract surgery, which involves removing the clouded lens and
replacing it with artificial lens.
