Have you ever experienced these symptoms?

  • Chest pain - after examination, your physician tells you it's not heart related and suspect that the problem is caused by abnormal movement of your esophagus or reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus.
  • Difficulty swallowing - aft er an endoscope exam or after swallowing the powdery "dye" and X-ray, the results shows that nothing is blocking the esophagus.
  • Burning sensation around the pit of the stomach or the chest, chronic cough, chronic asthma, chronic hoarseness, sore throat, chronic throat pain, chronic sinusitis that has been non responsive to past treatment - these symptoms may be caused by the abnormal reflux of the stomach acid into the esophagus due to overly relax or weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

Samitivej Liver and Digestive Institute is proud to introduce an innovative equipment for measuring movement and acidity of the esophagus - Esophageal Manometry. It is an equipment whose function is to detect abnormality in the movement of the esophagus in patients who has difficulty swallowing, non-cardiac chest pain, and/or gastroesophageal reflux disease

    Our procedure:

In order to examine the esophagus, the physician will insert a tiny cord (about 0.4 cm in diameter) through your nose and into the esophagus. The patient may feel slightly irritated in the nostril or throat area during the exam. The entire process takes around 30-45 minutes.

    Preparing for the exam:

    1.
If the patient is taking medication that has an effect on the movement of the esophagus, such as Domperidone Cisapride, Tegaserod, then they must stop taking the medication at least 3 days prior to the exam.
    2.
If the patient is taking certain psychiatric medication, especially the ones for depressive disorder should stop taking the medicine at least 7 days prior to the exam, unless the physician allows you to continue the medication.

On the day of the exam:

Patient must refrain from eating and drinking at least 6 hours prior to the exam.

The physician will read the results from the computer which will provide information on the movement and function of the esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter. Based on the findings, the patient will receive an appropriate treatment so that you will no longer have to suffer from the above symptoms again
