     Intravenous Pyelography (IVP) is an examination of the urinary tract to check the shape and anatomy of the kidney, ureter, and bladder. It is also done to check for presence of bladder stone and tumors in the urinary tract. The exam is done by using a contrast medium and taking X-ray images of the urinary tract.
Preparing for the exam:
  • Patient must take 30 cc of laxative at bedtime on the night prior to the exam
  • Refrain from eating at least 6 hours before the exam
  • If there are any stools in the colon, it must be removed prior to the exam.
  • Patient should inform the physician of any disease or conditions that they have such as allergies, asthma, heart disease, and history of allergies to specific medicine and seafood so that the physician can give anti-allergy medication.
    During the exam:
  • Physician injects a contrast medium into a vein in the arm and takes a series of X-ray images at timed intervals.
