Ultrasound of the lower
abdomen for women is an imaging procedure used to examine the
internal organs of the lower abdomen including the bladder, uterus,
and ovaries, or to examine the monthly ovulation. The ultrasound
machine sends out high-frequency sound waves that reflect off body
structures to create a picture. There are two approaches in
conducting the exam:
Transabdomina
The ultrasound
transducer (a hand-held probe) is placed on the skin of the
abdomen. It is used for unmarried female patients or those who
have surgically removed their uterus and ovaries. |
Transvaginal
The ultrasound
transducer (a hand-held probe) is inserted directly into the
vagina. It is therefore closer to pelvic structures than with
the transabdominal technique. It is used for married female
patients who did not surgically remove their uterus and
ovaries. |
Preparing for the exam:
Drink several
glasses of water and hold the urine in so that the full
bladder will push the uterus away from the pelvic area and
allow greater visibility of uterus, uterus lining, and both
ovaries. (This is for Trans Abdomen Only) |
After the exam:
Patient can
urinate in the
restroom. | |
